Pois é, já começou o workshop de Jornalismo Online, inserido no Summer Institute 08, e orientado pelo professor Rosental Alves. Tirando a minha desorientação na cidade de Lisboa, o primeiro dia foi muito bom. Primeiro porque encontrei algumas pessoas de quem já falei aqui no Lago – o Paulo Nuno Vicente e o António Granado – e porque as experiências profissionais e background dos participantes são muito variadas(jornalistas e não só), o que promete tornar a discussão muito abrangente. Depois, Rosental Alves tem um percurso muito rico e é tremendamente simpático, o que torna as aulas muito interessantes e muito agradáveis de seguir.
Hoje basicamente foi um dia para apresentações, tanto do programa como dos participantes, e introdução ao tema do Jornalismo Online. Passo a partilhar algumas das notas que tirei, embora ao vivo tenha sido muito dinâmico para um primeiro dia:
Começámos por falar dos novos paradigmas impostos pela Revolução Digital, que tem dois precedentes históricos, Guttenberg e a Revolução Industrial, pela forma como alteraram a produção e divulgação de conteúdos, e as suas consequências a nível social e político.
Referiu-se Jim Moroney, do Dallas Morning News, que num simpósio em Austin apontou o período de 2002 a 2012, como o de maiores transformações nos jornais americanos (entenda-se crise). Para tal temos duas imagens: o Titanic a afundar-se ou a divisão das águas do Mar Vermelho (leia-se desespero ou esperança, porque estes são os dois estados de espírito presentes na indústria).
Na transição da Sociedade Industrial para a Sociedade de Informação, rompeu-se com a comunicação de massa, vertical, unididreccional, fechada, para um outro modelo, mais personalizado, interactivo. Os mass media complementam-se com a massa dos “eu-media”, numa simbiose que ainda ainda está no início e com resultados ainda imprevisíveis. Muito ainda consideram a Internet como apenas mais um meio, mas é mais do que isso. De notar que os telemóveis vão ultrapassar os computadores como postos de acesso à web.
Processo de Mediamorfose
A seguir abordámos as ideias de Jeremy Tunstall, que diz que a cada 20 anos surge um novo meio de comunicação. Pegando neste conceito, Roger Fidler desenvolveu seis princípios, considerando que , de cada vez que surge um novo meio tão poderoso que parece que vai acabar com os restantes, os outros acabam por se adaptar. Os seis princípios são:
- Co-evolução e coexistência;
- Metamorfose;
- Propagação;
- Sobrevivência;
- Oportunidade e necessidade;
- Adopção atrasada;
Se quiserem saber mais pormenores, sigam este link (ficheiro PowerPoint). Rosental Alves discorda da ideia de metamorfose e apresenta a ideia de mediacídio. Basicamente, durante o processo de absorção de todos os meios existentes pela Internet, alguns sobrevivem, outros não. A opção ou é a hibridização dos meios digitais e tradicionais ou a sua morte (lá está o Titanic).
O Jornalismo Online é ponte entre a Era Industial e a Era Digital para a indústria, pois mudam os modelos de negócio graças esta ruptura tecnológica, embora não haja garantias que resulte. Para o fim, ficámos de ver o Huffington Post como um exemplo desta transição. E é isso que vou fazer. Assim que puder, escrevo mais sobre o que se vai passando no workshop.

Oh yeah, the Onlline Journalism Workshop inserted in the Summer Institute 08, and lectured by professor Rosental Alves has begun. Aside my disorientation in the city of Lisbon, first day was great. First of all because i got to meet some people that i had already talked about here at the Lake- Paulo Nuno Vicente and António Granado – and the participants professional experiences and background are quite different (journalists and others), which makes discussion really promising. Then, Rosental Alves has a very rich history and he is terribly nice, which makes the classes very interesting and pleasant to follow.
Today was basically dedicated to presentations, of the program and of the participants, and to an introduction to Online Journalism. I’m sharing now with you some notes i took, though things were quite dynamic live, even for a first day:
We started to talk about the new paradigms imposed by the Digital Revolution, that has two historical precedents, Guttenberg and the Industrial Revolution, by the way they changed production and dissemination of contents, and their consequences on social and political levels.
There was a reference to Jim Moroney, from the Dallas Morning News, that at a conference in Austin pointed out the period between 2002 to 2012 as the one with the biggest transformations for american newspapers (i.e. crisis). We have two good images for that: the sinking Titanic or the parting of the Red Sea (this means despair or hope, which are the two main mindsets that coexist presently in the news industry).
During the transition from the Industrial to the Digital Society, there was a break with mass communication, more vertical, one way, closed, to another model, more costumized, interactive. The mass media are now complemented by own media, in a symbiotic process that it is still at the very beggining, and with unpredictable results. Many still conder the Internet as just another medium, when it really goes beyond that. It was noted that cell phones will overcome computers asthe main devices to access the web.
MediaMorphosis
We then discussed the ideas of Jeremy Tunstall, that says that every 20 years a new medium appears. Taqking on this concept, Roger Fidler developed six principles, regarding that every time a new medium comes is so powerful that it seems that will finish all the others, yet they do seem to adapt. The six principles are:
- Co-evolution and coexistence;
- Metamorphosis;
- Propagation;
- Survival;
- Opportunity and need;
- Delayed adoption;
If you want more details on this follow this link (PowerPoint file). Rosental Alves disagrees with this idea of metamorphosis and presented the concept of mediacide. Basically, during Internet’s absorption process of the existing media, some survive, and some don’t. The alternatives are the hybridization of digital media with traditional media or their death (there’s the Titanic).
Online Journalism becomes the bridge between the Industrial Age and the Digital age, because business models have changed thanks to this technological shift, though there are no guarantees it might work. Finally, we set the Huffington Post as an example of this transition. And now i have to analyze it. As soon as i can i’ll write more about what is going on during the workshop.
