Changes 3: New column | Mudanças 3: Coluna nova

And in the latest instalment for changes around here, i’d like to announce that yesterday i started my column dedicated to new media at Rascunho.IOL.pt. I am honored for the invitation they made and hope to provide a few interesting insights about the Media Revolution. The title for this weekly reflection is “Media DJ”, and the English version will be available  in my (new) blog, becoming somehow an extension of my work. Below is the first text for Media DJ.

E no mais recente capítulo dedicado a mudanças por aqui, gostaria de anunciar que ontem iniciei a minha coluna/caderno sobre  novos media no Rascunho.IOL.pt. Estou honrado pelo convite que me fizeram e espero dar algumas visões pessoais interessantes sobre a Revolução dos Media. O título para esta reflexão semanal é “Media DJ”, e a versão em inglês estará sempre disponível no meu (novo) blog, sendo uma extensão do meu trabalho . Leiam o primeiro texto, no Rascunho.

Imagine a stage, and you’re sitting in the audience. From up there, one or several characters proclaim the news of the day, the events they chose as the most important. They do it at a certain time, in a ritualized fashion and within a specific duration.They ignore your reactions, and aren’t quite interested in you but in how many of you are watching them. This was the paradigm for the relationship between audience and media. Then came the Internet and everything changed.

Today, the stage and the audience share the same space, there are several voices for many subjects, each one with its own perspective and different origins; information flows within that space between all the elements, from media to users, to other users, to other media. The keywords for this new model are sharing, dialogue, mobility/ubiquity and real time. Contents are made of layers, a new contribution or production is built over the previous one. And everyone can participate: with text, photos, video.

The information industry and journalism are going through the biggest revolution they’ve ever  gone through. The content creation and dissemination tools evolved rapidly, and more important, they are availabe to anyone. The audience became an active element in the creation and disseminaton of information. In a matter of years we went from static versions of newspapers to multimedia rich content, real time information provided by users in social networks and on Twitter, anywhere, to everywhere, which deviated the media from the center of the news paradigm, forcing them to reconsider how to interact with their users, how to work information on the web, publish it, renew it, in a profound change of processes and views. And also how to make that profitable.

The name of this column is Media DJ, because all these changes influenced journalist’s work, demanding new skills. DJ has a double meaning, being the first, the one who, from other people’s music, mixes, remixes, aligns and generates a new dynamic, turning the whole bigger than the sum of its parts; and it also works for Digital Journalism/Journalist. Information DJs do exactly the same as music DJs, they pick up the pieces and generate a a new set, but with a totally different responsibility: they contribute to the creation of a collective conscience, and a well informed society will make better choices. In the end, nothing changed in the fundamental role of journalism, just the way you do it.

Every week i hope to bring a part of that (r)evolution, that is unfolding faster than reality can keep up. You just have to follow the music.

I’ve been delaying this for too long, but now is the time to do it. I’m shutting down The Lake, but you won’t get rid of me that easy, i’m just moving to a new self-hosted blog. The Lake has fulfilled it’s purpose: the work i developed here and the reputation it garnered me, helped yours truly get a place at the MA Online Journalism run by Paul Bradshaw and got me in touch with dozens of smart people interested in taking journalism to modern times. If i ever had a good idea, starting The Lake was it. But a lake is a mass of still waters. It’s time to open the damn and let them flow, and find the  best path through the constraining banks. Besides, i need a personal branded blog, it’s one of the things you have to do . I won’t export the contents of The Lake to the new blog, all will still be available here. The Lake will work as a backup resource for some stuff, so it’s not really going away. For the next weeks i’m going to publish my posts simultaneously here and in the new blog, so we can have a smooth change. And if something happens, well, i’ll come back these shores. The new blog is not finished yet, and i plan to do a run down of some of its features soon, but i count on you to share your thoughts and ideas, and make it better. All of this is because of you, you are part of it and without your input none of this would have never happened. This is not mine alone. So, thank you. PS: one of the features i had more fun doing is one i hope you never get to see, but i like it so much i’m sharing it with you: my custom 404 page (don’t forget to scroll down a bit).

Tenho adiado isto há já demasiado tempo, mas agora é altura de o fazer. Vou fechar O Lago, mas não se vão ver livres de mim, vou-me mudar para um novo blog. O Lago cumpriu o seu propósito: o trabalho que desenvolvi aqui e a reputação que me granjeou ajudou-me a conseguir um lugar no MA de Jornalismo Online do Paul Bradshaw e pôs-me em contacto com dezenas de pessoas inteligentes interessadas em trazer o jornalismo para os tempos modernos. Se tive ideias boas, O Lago foi uma delas. Mas um lago é uma massa de águas paradas. É tempo de abrir as comportas e deixá-las correr, e encontrar o caminho possível entre as margens. Além disso preciso de um blog com marca própria, é uma das coisas que se deve fazer. Eu não vou exportar os conteúdos d’O Lago para o novo blog, tudo vai-se manter disponível por aqui. O Lago irá servir como  solução de recurso  para algumas coisas, por isso não vai mesmo desaparecer. Durante as próximas semanas vou publicar em simultâneo aqui e no novo blog para que a transição seja o mais suave possível. E se acontecer alguma coisa, volto a estas margens. O novo blog ainda não está acabado, e planeio fazer uma revisão a alguns dos seus componentes em breve, mas conto com vocês para partilharem as vossas ideias e fazê-lo melhor. Tudo isto acontece por vossa causa, vocês fazem parte disto e sem o vosso contributo nada disto tinha acontecido. Isto não é só meu. Por isso, obrigado. PS: um dos pormenores do novo site que mais gozo me deu a fazer é uma que eu espero que nunca tenham que ver, mas gosto tanto que tenho que partilhá-lo com vocês: a minha página 404 (não se esqueçam de descer na página).

#Holidays are over… for now | As #férias acabaram… por agora

Work is the answer | O trabalho é a resposta

I took these last days off the interwebz to get some rest but i have to the result was an utter #fail. I got some exciting news that will probably change my life from September on. Some of you already know what it is, but i will not disclose it here at the blog until everything is settled. Sorry about that. I had some time to think about the blog though and i think it’s going to be moved to my own domain anytime during the next month. I’ll let you know then, this is just a heads-up.  I still believe in the blogging platform, and i’ll aggregate to it the other channels i use to divert some content like links and short comments, but keep on blogging some more hardcore ideas. Still, i’ll be busy until the end of the month so don’t expect much writing from me. I’ll do less, but hopefully more interesting. I’ve been reading a lot of saved and new posts that made me sure that we are already in a new phase in media, and many of the arguments of the death of this and that are a complete waste of time. If it’s good and captivates people’s minds and hearts the medium is not important. If it has quality and adds value to people’s lives, it can be profited from. And the end of the transition phase from print to digital is over, as we are witnessing new developments in the way information is presented. Now the frontier is mobile, in community  and in real time. More about that in another post. For now i recommend one thing for (young) journalists: before knowing video, coding, flash etc, you need to know how to do journalism. Without it, the technical skills are rather pointless for this job. Get the Reuters’ Handbook and have a nice summer. I’m back.

Tirei estes últimos dias de folga das internetes para descansar mas redundou tudo num tremendo #fail. Tenho algumas notícias excitantes que irão provavelmente mudar a minha vida a partir de Setembro. Alguns de vocês já sabem do que se trata,mas não vou revelar agora aqui no blog até estar tudo resolvido, desculpem-me os restantes. Apesar de tudo tive algum tempo para pensar sobre o blog e penso que vou movê-lo para o meu próprio domínio durante o próximo mês. eu aviso-vos, este é apenas um pré-aviso. Ainda acredito no blog como plataforma, e vou agregar-lhe os outros canais que uso para dirigir alguns conteúdos como links e pequenos comentários, mas  usar o blog para ideias mais fortes. Mesmo assim vou andar ocupado até ao fim do mês por isso não esperem muita escrita minha. Vou fazer menos, mas , espero eu, mais interessante. Tenho lidos muitos posts que guardei e novos que me dão a certeza de que estamos já numa nova fase dos média, e que os argumentos da morte disto e daqui são uma total perda de tempo. Se for bom e cativar as mentes e os corações das pessoas o meio não importa. Se tem qualidade e acrescenta valor à vida das pessoas, pode gerar receita. E o fim da fase de transição do impresso para o digital está no fim, assim que assistimosa novos desenvolvimentos na forma como a informação é apresentada. Agora a fronteira é móvel, em comunidade e em tempo real. Mas mais sobre isso noutro post. Para já recomendo uma coisa aos  (jovens) jornalistas: antes de saberem video, programação, flash etc, precisam de saber como fazer jornalismo. Sem isso, todas as competências técnicas são inúteis para esta profissão. Leiam o Reuters’ Handbook e tenham um bom Verão. Estou de volta.

New interns’ blog @Público | Novo blog de estagiários no Público

After what i found to be a successful and interesting experience with i think it was the first official intern’s blog at a national newspaper, Público decided to pursue the effort creating a space where current interns can blog their impressions, difficulties, doubts, hopes, mistakes and accomplishments. This is a praiseworthy iniciative, because it does not only give voice to aspiring journalists as they have their first hands-on experience in a real newsroom environment – and one as reputable as Público’s – as it is a way for the company to show how is keeping up with its responsibilities as a trainer and nursery for budding journalists. A must read for all journalism students.

Depois do que achei ter sido uma experiência interessante e bem sucedida, com o que penso ter sido o primeiro blog oficial de um estagiário num jornal português, o Público decidiu prolongar a iniciativa criando um blog onde os seus estagiários podem fdeixar as suas impressões, dificuldades, dúvidas, esperanças, erros e vitórias. Esta é uma iniciativa de louvar, porque não só dá voz a aspirantes a jornalistas na sua primeira experiência real numa redacção – e uma tão notável como a do Público – como é uma forma de a empresa mostrar como está a cumprir as suas responsabilidades de formação de futuros jornalistas. Uma leitura obrigatória para todos os estudantes de jornalismo.

Vanessa Quitério is a friend of mine who started as an intern at Público, one of the major reference dailies here in Portugal. She started a blog that will work as log-book for her experience. Still in the first days of her  three month internship she has already got to a few conclusions: “-face this internship as an opportunity to learn how to improve my perceptions on journalism; -do not stress on the third day because someone says i can’t have some information; -don’t be demanding to the point of wanting to give up because i wrote an article upside down instead of using the inverted pyramid; -stay cool about my place as an intern , which is the place of those who get to do all the most boring stuff; -really learn from the tips people give me, since this is a valuable opportunity to learn from them;” Do you know any other interns blogging about their life and work in newsroom hell? Recebi um email do Journalism.co.uk a informar-me que o meu modesto blog passou a figurar na sua lista do melhor dos blogs de jornalismo. Este é só um dos meus sites de referência na área. Nada mau para quem esteve para desistir do jornalismo e anda a formar-se por conta própria, sem trabalho e com uma licenciatura do século passado. Obrigado, afinal parece que há mesmo Natal.

I got an email from Journalism.co.uk letting me know that this modest blog is now part of their Best of the journalism blogs list. This is just one of my favorite websites about the business. Not bad for someone who almost quit journalism, that has no job and is learning on his own, with a last century degree. Thank you, after all there is a Christmas.

Bloggers e a grande baleia branca dos direitos dos jornalistas | Bloggers and the great white whale of journalist’s rights

Rights under article 10 of the European convention on human rights, which protects free speech, are always asserted and journalists rely on the Contempt of Court Act 1981, which prevents an order for disclosure being made unless it is “necessary in the interest of justice or national security or for the prevention of disorder or crime”. But at this point in the discussion we hit a stumbling block. Who is a journalist in an era of mass self-publishing?

The answer matters because case law tends to talk in terms of freedom of the press and journalistic privilege rather than everyone’s privilege. “Protection of journalistic sources is one of the basic conditions for press freedom,” said the European court of human rights in the Goodwin case 12 years ago. “Without such protection, sources may be deterred from assisting the press in informing the public in matters of public interest. As a result the vital watchdog role of the press may be undermined.” While this holds true, the task of ensuring the free flow of information is no longer the sole preserve of journalists.

Editorial 1 Setembro | September 1st 2008 – The Guardian

Deverão – ou poderão -os bloggers ter os mesmos direitos e responsabilidades que os jornalistas? Esta questão tem causado bastante discussão e é abordada no editorial de hoje do The Guardian. A verdade é que os bloggers podem , ou não, ser  jornalistas, mas são por si só um canal de informação. As instituições começam a aperceber-se disso na sua promoção: a recente convenção democrata em Denver atribuiu um número recorde de credenciais a bloggers; empresas de tecnologia há muito que enviam produtos para serem testados e criticados em blogs especializados; convidam-se bloggers para festas para promover empresas. E porquê? Porque têm por vezes um público que ultrapassa os meios tradicionais, não em números mas em especificidade. São os nichos que contam. Mas quando o trabalho que fazem é igual ao jornalístico, qual é a sua protecção e quais são os seus deveres? Para se ser  considerado como jornalista, em muitas partes do mundo é preciso uma carteira profissional, atribuída por uma entidade independente (de preferência). Eu, pessoalmente, acho isto inútil em vários pontos, mas é para outro post que já ando a adiar há algum tempo.O titular desta certificação está sob várias restrições e liberdades que lhe permitem exercer a sua actividade dentro de um código de conduta. Idealmente, pois basta abrir um jornal ou ver os noticiários e vemos que não é bem assim. Por incompetência, agenda pessoal, ou pressão empresarial ou corporativa, manda-se o código às urtigas, e ou se é irresponsável pela criação de conteúdos, ou, ainda mais assustador, pelo silêncio. Os bloggers são tão independentes, isentos ou (ir)responsáveis como qualquer jornalista. Mas não estão isentos de ser responsabilizados quando os conteúdos que produzem afectam de forma grave a consciência colectiva e a vida de terceiros. Mas aqui está a baleia branca- quem é que os protege quando é necessário? O mecanismo legal deveria ser geral e não privilegiando apenas uma classe, ou seja, qualquer um que crie conteúdos deveria estar abrangido por um conjunto de regras único. Até lá, quem escreve jornalisticamente num  blog, sujeita-se. Ao bom e ao mau. Apesar de alguns privilégios e de existir uma margem de manobra que muitos inteligentemente usam – um jornal confirma e procura validação dos factos, enquanto muitos bloggers libertam informação sem grandes restrições ou confirmações oficiais- também muitas vezes ao difundirem factos verdadeiros são perseguidos, atacados, pressionados. Mas não despedidos. Um blogger pode ser um jornalista, mas que não está sob a alçada de uma empresa de comunicação, nem sob a protecção de uma associação de classe. Mas têm menos direitos e responsabilidades? Não. Têm os mesmos direitos,responsabilidades, e acredito que por comparação, mais liberdades. UPDATE- Tinha acabado de postar isto e o António Granado partilhou este post sobre ética jornalística que ajuda a perceber as dificuldades existentes. Foi um blog que começou tudo (assim como noutras situações.)

Should – or could – bloggers have the same rights as journalists? This argument has been going on forever and it is the subject of today’s editorial at The Guardian. The truth is that bloggers may or may not be journalists, but they are an information channel by themselves. Institutions are becoming aware of that: the recent democrat convention in Denver had a record number of credentialed bloggers; tech compnaies have been for quite some time sending products to be tested and evaluated by specialized blogs; bloggers are invited for companies promotional parties. And why? Because sometimes their audience surpasses the  traditional media not in number but specificness. It’s the niche that counts. But when  the job they do is the same as  journalists, what protection  and duties they have? In many countries,   to be considered a journalist one must have a professinal credential, given by an independent entity (preferably). Personally, i think this is useless in several points, but that is for a long delayed post. The holder of this certification is under some restrictions and liberties, that allows him  to carry out his activity within a code of conduct. Ideally, because you just have to open a newspaper or watch the news to understand that is not really quite like that. Due to incompetence, personal agenda, or management or corporative pressure, you can see how they send the codes to hell, and they’re irresponsible in creating content, or even more frightening, opting for silence. Bloggers are as independent, unbiased or (ir)responsible as any other journalist. But they’re not exempt of being accounted for the content they create when it affects gravely the collective conscience and the life of others. But here’s the white whale- who’s protecting them when they need? The legal mechanism sould be general, and not to priviledge just one class of people, which is, anyone that creates content should be under a unique set of rules. Until then, who writes journalistically in a blog is exposed. To good and evil. In spite of some priviledges and a manoeuvre margin that some cleverly use – a newspaper should check and validate all facts, while many bloggers release information without meaningful restrictions or official confirmations – sometimes when sharing true facts they are harassed, attacked, pressured.Not fired though. A blogger can be a journalist, but one that is not under the umbrella of a communication company, nor under the protection of a professional guild. But do they have less rights and responsabilities? No. They have those same rights, responsibilities, and i truly believe that by comparison, they have more freedom. UPDATE- I had just posted this when António Granado shared this post on journalistic ethics, that helps us to understand in practice how hard it is today. It was a blog that started it all (as in other situations.)
