Público created a GoogleMap for WiFi hotspots in Portugal. So far it doesn’t sound like a  big deal, but this project relies on the contributions of their users. Better? It’s a simple crowdsourcing solution for a very practical matter. According to the experience i have with collaborative maps it’s a tough task to supervise the data and keep them tidy, but it’s worth it.  Kudos! Note: i know it is stil in Beta phase, but the map page remains untitled. It’s just one basic HTML line.

O Público criou um GoogleMap para os hotspots de Wifi em Portugal. Até agora isto não parece nada de especial, mas e se vos disser que é feito pelos utilizadores? É uma solução simples de crowdsourcing para uma questão muito prática. Tendo em conta a experiência que tenho com mapas colaborativos, a tarefa mais difícil é supervisionar os dados e mantê-lo arrumado, mas vale a pena. Parabéns! Nota: eu sei que ainda está em beta, mas a página do mapa ainda está sem título. É só uma linha básica de HTML.

Jornais portugueses no YouTube | Portuguese newspapers in YouTube

Depois de ter surgido no 10.000words um mapa com todos os jornais americanos com canal no YouTube, foram feitos um para o Reino Unido, outro para a Noruega, e ainda outro para a Polónia . Esta é a minha contribuição para Portugal. Dos 173 websites de jornais portugueses que analisei, pude ver que 19 usam vídeo mas apenas 6 nove recorrem ao Youtube. Os restantes recorrem ao SapoVídeo ou enta, alojam os próprios trabalhos.

After 10000words presented a map with all the american newspapers that had a YouTube channel , a few others were created for other countries, like the UK, Norway and Poland. This is my own effort to map the portuguese situation. Out of the 173 newspaper websites i went through only 19 use video, and from those only six nine have YouTube  channels. The others rely on SapoVideos or host their own work.

“Onde?” | “Where?”

Das perguntas base para necessárias para a construção de qualquer notícia, o ONDE está a ganhar destaque. O crime é um dos assuntos mais fáceis de seguir, e vários sites utilizam mapas para indicar as zonas mais perigosas. Um Google Map da cidade de Londres acabou por me fazer lembrar do jogo “Scotland Yard“, onde o Mr.X fugia aos seus perseguidores. Infelizmente, neste mapa os crimes são reais. Alguém conhece em Portugal algum site que use um mapa para informação noticiosa?

Amongst the basic questions for writing a news story, the WHERE is starting to stand out. One of the subjects that is easier to monitor is crime, and many sites use maps to show the most dangerous areas. A London Google Map reminded me of the “Scotland Yard” board game, where a Mr.X tried to escape his chasers. Unfortunately, in this map all the crimes are real. O Google e o New York Times juntaram-se para pôr as notícias no mapa. É preciso ter a última versão do Google Earth e quando clicarmos nos marcos do NYT teremos todas as notícias associadas a esse local. Será o Google Earth o jornal online do futuro?

Google and New York Times teamed up to put the news on the map. All you need is the latest version of Google Earth and when you click a NYT placemark you’ll access all the news regarding that location. Is Google Earth the online news reader of the future?

Zac Echola, um dos fundadores do Wired Journalists, fez um pequeno tutorial para se criarem galerias de imagens com mapas, uma funcionalidade que pode ser utilizada em jornais locais, por exemplo. E de borla.

Zac Echola, one of the Wired Journalists founders, posted a small tutorial to create photo galleries with a map, a feature that could be used by local papers, for instance. And it’s free.

De onde? | Where from?

De onde são os meus leitores? Paul Bradshaw aproveitou e criou um mapa onde todos os leitores do seu blog se poderiam inscrever, e assim perceber onde e por quem é lido. Os resultados são muito interessantes. Aqui pelo Lago sabemos muito bem de onde vocês vêm, graças ao mapa da whos.amung.us. Não chega ao pormenor de ficar a saber onde moram mas dá para ter uma ideia do meu público. Só sei que vale a pena escrever em duas línguas.

Where do my readers come from? Paul Bradshaw asked the same question and built a map where all his blog’s readers could sign in, and understand where and by whom he’s read. The results are quite interesting. Around here by the Lake, we know very from where you all come from, thanks to the whos.amung.us map. It doesn’t get to details like the street you live in, but it gives a basic idea about my audience. I just know it pays to write in two languages.

O uso de mapas em sites informativos tem permitido dar uma nova perspectiva sobre alguns tipos de acontecimentos. Até os noticiários televisivos usam o Google Earth para nos levar até ao “onde”. Mas há sites que usam os mapas para criar hiper-localidade. No exemplo acima, o site GlobalIncidentMap mostra-nos onde ocorreram eventos terroristas e outras actividades suspeitas. Mas há outras aplicações disponíveis: no Rotten Neighbor podemos conhecer a vizinhança antes de ir morar para o bairro, ou queixarmo-nos dos nossos vizinhos. Outros projectos, talvez mais interessantes por aplicarem o conceito de hiper localidade, são o chicagocrime.org (offline desde o dia 1 de Fevereiro de 2008)e o EveryBlock , do Adrian Holovaty , onde a vida das cidades é analisada a partir do local onde as coisas aconteceram. O que levanta a questão se será que conhecemos as ruas onde passamos todos os dias? De qualquer forma, o potencial do uso de mapas em sites dedicados a um tema específico é enorme. Em Portugal, o mapa que se aplicava já era o dos acidentes nas estradas. Alguém quer pensar nisso?

Maps use on the internet has allowed to take a whole new perspective over some types of events. Even the TV newsrooms use Google Earth to fly us to the “where”. But there are websites that use maps to create hyper-locality. In the example above, thw website GlobalIncidentMap shows us where terrorist events and other suspicious activities have occurred, around the world. But there are other applications available for maps: at Rotten Neighbor we can “meet” the neighbors even before moving in to the neighborhood, or complain about the ones we already have. Other projects, maybe more interesting as far the hyper local concept is concerned, are Adrian Holovaty‘s chicagocrime.org (offline from Feb 1st 2008) and EveryBlock, where city life is analyzed from where things happen. Which raises the question if we really know the streets we walk on everyday? Anyway, the potential of maps in theme websites is huge. In Portugal, the map we needed right now would be about road accidents. Does anyone want to take it?
