‘How to Write for the Web’: in Portuguese | Em Português

clique na imagem para fazer o download

I had already talked about the spanish edition, now here’s the portuguese version.

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas at Austin has just published a Portuguese-language edition of the e-book How to Write for the Web, written by Colombian journalist Guillermo Franco and translated by Brazilian journalist Marcelo Soares.

How to Write for the Web is the second skills guide for journalists that the Knight Center has published. In December 2007, the Knight Center launched electronic Spanish and Portuguese editions of the e-book Journalism 2.0: How to Survive and Thrive, A digital literacy guide for the information age, written by U.S. journalist Mark Briggs.

The Spanish, Portuguese, and English editions of that book can also be downloaded in PDF format for free from the Knight Center’s website. It has been downloaded close to 17,000 times since its publication.

O Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas lançou mais um manual de ciberjornalismo.

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas has published another cyberjournalism manual. “Cómo escribir para la Web” was written by Guillermo Franco with the purpose to be a guide for Latin America journalists, but that it might be useful for all of those who speak Spanish.

You can download the .pdf file for free here.

Franco’s new book presents practical examples about writing for online publications, as well as research from other sources. He considers it to be more than just a manual, but rather a starting point for a more comprehensive guide about writing for the Web, with contributions from journalists throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

Already, several colleagues who participated in the project have begun a discussion group in Facebook about “How to write for the Web.”

“This document will serve as part of the answer to the journalist training needs in Latin America. It follows the same path and philosophy of other efforts supported by the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas,” said Rosental C. Alves, founder and director of he Knight Center.

“Networked Journalism, SuperMedia: Saving Journalism So It Can Save The World”

Journalism matters. We live in a much more interconnected world where information is ever-more critical to our lives. And it is journalism that conveys that data and allows us to debate its significance. It is always hard to pinpoint exact moments or to detail precise occasions when journalism has altered the course of events, rather than simply narrating them. It is nigh on impossible to separate out media impact from the general conditions of events.

In this book I will outline what I call Networked Journalism. It is a new way of practicing journalism that is already becoming evident. It is a reflection of emerging realities. But it is also an opportunity to transform the ethics as well as the efficacy of journalism. Networked Journalism offers the chance for the news media to enhance its social role. It is a recognition that mainstream professional journalists must share the very process of production. Networked Journalism includes citizen journalism, interactivity, open sourcing, wikis, blogging, and social networking, not as add-ons, but as an essential part of news production and distribution itself.

And what kind of journalism are we producing in such abundance? Is the world of cyber-journalism going to be about citizen journalism or amateur pornography?

Estes são excertos da introdução para o livro de Charlie Beckett “Networked Journalism, SuperMedia: Saving Journalism So It Can Save The World” .

“Is this why newspapers are dying? Because there are no communities?”

The Power of Organizing Without Organizations

Mindy MacAdams comenta no seu blog uma passagem do livro de Clay Shirky Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing Without Organizations, onde se faz uma diferenciação das relações entre o público e os media, e entre os próprios utilizadores e criadores de conteúdos. E a meio faz esta questão avassaladora: “Is this why newspapers are dying? Because there are no communities?” .

Mindy MacAdams comments on her blog a passage from the book by Clay Shirky Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing Without Organizations, where is established a differenciation in the relations between public and media, and among the users themselves and content generators. And then she makes this overwhelming question: “Is this why newspapers are dying? Because there are no communities?“.

If before, and due to structural reasons, a newspaper was closer to a group or a community, with the new media the transversality in the audiences increased, just like the concepts of of specialization and hyperlocality became prevailing to the definition and survival of some media.

Quoting Shirky, “Audiences are not the same as communities, and communities are made up of people talking to one another”, Mindy MacAdams leaves perhaps the most fundamental question for the identity of the media in transition: what do communities need and how can journalists provide it?

The game is longer played under the premiss of answering to the basic questions of journalism, but with the problematic rendering and participation of all who want to participate in the construction of a hyper-common-sense, of a hyper collective conscience upon reality. The audience is no longer the destination but an active principle, and this is where the change is really happening.

An audience is not a community, Mindy MacAdams
