New Life | Vida Nova

Life is the mother of american photojournalism magazines. So when Time Inc. decided to fold the print magazine two years ago, there was a huge void in the news landscape, where tradition and History once stood. Google joined efforts with Time last year to keep Life’s legacy alive, creating a photo archive that managed 110 years of pictures. Valuable, but no where close to where the Life brand should be. But yesterday, their new website was launched. Life.com is a partnership between Time Inc.  and Getty images, and is a dynamic presentation of present day photojournalism, and archive pictures, starting in the 1850’s. The new website has lots of features like celebrity curators, user and editor’s pick and theme areas. Life ‘s iconic value has been  recovered, and even more, it has stepped into a new age.

Por isso, quando a Time Inc. decidiu fechar a revista em papel há dois anos, ficou um enorme vazio na paisagem noticiosa, onde antes se associaram tradição e História. O Google uniu esforços com a Time no ano passado para manter o legado da Life vivo, criando um arquivo fotográfico que abrangia 110 anos de fotos. Valioso, mas abaixo do valor da marca Life. Mas ontem lançaram o seu novo website. O Life.com é uma parceria entre a Time Inc. e a Getty Images, e é uma apresentação dinâmica do fotojornalismo actual, e imagens de arquivo, que começa em 1850. O novo site tem áreas temáticas, escolhas de celebridades, escolhas do editor e do utilizador. O valor icónico da Life foi recuperado, e , mais do que isso, foi transportado para uma nova era.

Read before use | Ler antes de usar

I was organizing some folders in my desktop when i realized i had a bundle of unread pdfs, that covered issues from Krav Maga to Slide Guitar lessons. And Journalism, of course. Some of these manuals and resources were already referred here at The Lake. They are great for students and seasoned professionals, from writers to multimedia enthusiasts, and are a valuable asset for those who are converting to new media. This is not a final list, so if you have any other links i’d appreciate if you’d share them with the rest of us. Special thanks to Daniel Doyle for helping me out with this one.

Estava eu a organizar algumas pastas aqui no meu computador quando me apercebi que tinha um monte de pdfs por ler, sobre temas desde Krav Maga a lições de Slide Guitar. E Jornalismo, claro. Alguns destes manuais e recursos já foram falados aqui no Lago. São excelentes para estudantes ou veteranos, desde escritores a entusiastas do multimédia, e uma mais valia importante para aqueles que se estão a converter aos novos média. Esta lista não está terminada, por isso se tiverem mais links agradecia que os partilhassem connosco. Um agradecimento especial ao Daniel Doyle por me ter ajudado com isto.

Portugal is going through one of the coldest weeks in decades, with negative temperatures and snow in several cities – we’re not used to this. So i asked my Twitter contacts if they could take pictures and videos showing how cold it is in the place they live, to create a open, crowdsourced map. So far, not bad. This is a project that will continue through the weekend, so keep following it.

Portugal está a atravessar uma das semanas mais frias das últimas décadas com neve e temperaturas negativas – não estamos habituados a isso. Por isso pedi aos meus contactos no Twitter para tirarem fotos e videos a mostrar como faz frio no sítio onde vivem, para um mapa aberto, em crowdsource. Até agora não vai mal. Este projecto continua no fim de semana por isso sigam-no.

O duro trabalho das imagens | Picture’s hard work

O título devia ser “O duro trabalho de um fotógrafo”. Mas vai assim. Quando tive a oportunidade de trabalhar para uma revista de música, as pessoas que me conheciam ficavam cheias de inveja por me pagarem para ver concertos. Bem, é divertido mas implica trabalho, e garanto-vos que eram os 1500 caracteres por artigo mais custosos da minha vida, por falta de espaço ou de referências. Mas diverti-me muito, acreditem. Quem eu passei a respeitar foi mesmo o fotógrafo com quem ia, que tirava milhares de fotos para se aproveitar apenas uma. Aprendi muito a vê-lo trabalhar, a usar diferentes lentes, a procurar perspectivas novas, a procurar o momento expressivo que transmitisse a alma do concerto. E sei que as melhores nunca niguém as viu. Foi disso que me lembrei quando vi esta série de posts do Mário Pires, sobre o seu trabalho no Festival Músicas do Mundo em Sines este ano. Não só partilha connosco algumas fotos fantásticas como explica as dificuldades e o que procurava em cada concerto, em cada foto. Acho que os profissionais deveriam fazer isto mais vezes: não só apresentar o seu trabalho, mas partilharem as experiências retiradas do processo. Tanto leitores comuns como entusiastas ganham com isso, como acho que se passa a respeitar o profissional que passa horas a trabalhar, quando todos se estão a divertir. Se bem que eu sei que o Mário se diverte muito, senão não o faria. Só tenho pena de não ter estado em Sines, mas isso fica para a próxima.

The headline should be “The photographer’s hard work”. But i’ll leave it like that. When i had the chance to work for a music magazine, some people who knew me were pretty darn jealous because i was getting paid to go to concerts. Well, it’s fun , but it also means a lot of hard work, and i can assure you those were the hardest 1500 characters per article i’ve ever had to write, due to lack of space or references. But i had my fun, believe me. Who i got to respect back then was the photographer who teamed up with me, that took thousands of photos just to publish one. I learned a lot watching him work, using the different lenses, looking for new perspectives, seraching for the expressive moment that conveyed the soul of that concert. And i know that the best ones nobody ever saw them. That is what came to my mind when i saw this series of posts by Mário Pires, about his work at the World Music Festival in Sines this year. Not only does he share with us some fantastic pictures, but he also explains the difficulties and what he was looking for in each concert, for each picture. I feel that professionals should do this more often: do more than show off their work, but also share the experiences they took from the process. Both regular readers and enthusiasts have something to gain from that, and i also think that we get to respect the pros that work for long hard hours , when everyone else is having fun. Though i know Mário had lots of fun, or else he wouldn’t do it. I just regret the fact i couldn’t be at Sines this year, but next time i’ll be there.

Fazer a cobertura fotográfica de um festival como o de Sines, é um desafio estimulante, mas que tem o seu preço.
Já há muito tempo que o trabalho do fotógrafo não se reduz apenas ao momento em que coleccionamos uma série de momentos no nosso material de captação favorito. Uma vez terminado o evento, há que preparar o material para a fase seguinte, a escolha e a edição das imagens a apresentar.
Se o concerto foi frutuoso, temos pela nossa frente muitas imagens para visionar antes de fazer a escolha. Nos casos de concertos pouco variados visualmente, essa escolha está facilitada.
Quando um dia de concertos começa às 19:00h e se pode prolongar até ás 06:00 do dia seguinte, todas estas questões se tornam mais importante do que quando o objecto é um concerto único, mais ainda quando temos pela frente dez dias seguidos de concertos.
Para além de todas as questões já referidas, há também que contar com alguma resistência física para aguentar o ritmo sem falhar.
No final de tudo, o importante é a impressão que perdura muito depois de tudo ter terminado, no caso de Sines a impressão é a de que foram dias intensos e bastante frutuosos em termos de fotografias que me satisfazem o crivo crítico (devemos sempre ser os nossos mais implacáveis críticos).

Richard Koci Hernandez do Multimedia Shooter escreveu um pequeno guia para jornalistas multimedia, nascido das notas criadas para workshops. Segundo o autor, “o livro contém 50 exercícios e ideias para se pensar criativamente sobre fotografia, video, audio e multimedia em geral.” Podem espreitar as primeiras 15 páginas aqui.

Richard Koci Hernandez from Multimedia Shooter wrote a small guide for multimedia journalists, born out of the notes he created for his workshops. According to him, “the book is packed with over 50 creative exercises and ideas to get you thinking creativity about photography, video, audio and multimedia in general.” You can take a peek at the first 15 pages here.
