How to tell our story? Let me count the ways. Mindy McAdams described the different available formats, so we can choose the most suitable support for our news story.

Video

  • Seeing / hearing directly
  • Motion / action
  • Audio & video complementary; puts you there at the scene
  • Experiential
  • Present tense

Text

  • Depth
  • Context / background / analysis
  • Low-tech — produce it anywhere, distribute anywhere
  • Literary
  • Links
  • Conversation
  • Fast & flexible
  • Cheap
  • Multi-platform “as is” — no conversions, no incompatibility

Photo

  • Stops time (viewer can study it)
  • Saleable (profits)
  • Fast to be absorbed
  • Sense of truth-telling
  • Can be complementary or stand-alone
  • Language-free (needs no translation)
  • Less expensive than other media (except text)

Audio

  • Theater of the mind
  • Hear it for yourself
  • Fast info about a speaker (personality, region, age; subtext)
  • Listen while multi-tasking
  • With or without narration (to add facts)
  • First-person
  • Verisimilitude

Audio slideshows

  • Layered still images and sound
  • Requires input from the user (McLuhanesque “cool media”)
  • Mood, emotions, feelings
  • Pulling two disparate things together (whole is greater than sum of parts)
  • Takes advantage of the still photo approach
  • Expands on traditional picture story

Data

  • Interactive
  • Personalized information (news near you; facts that directly affect your life)
  • Verifies
  • Relational (this plus that)
  • Long shelf life
  • Reference (go back again)

Graphic

  • Visualize complex information
  • Easy to digest
  • Comparisons
  • Spacial understanding
  • Chunk the info (into pieces, parts, or sequences)

Then i saw this Mindy McAdams post that i just had to add:

Tools for young journalists

As sugestões de Greg Linch em resumo:

  • 1- Aprendam a usar a Web;
  • 2- Leiam blogs sobre Jornalismo Online: ele dá uma boa lista- Ryan Sholin, Megan Taylor , Dave Lee , Mindy McAdams, Mark Briggs, Paul Conley, Howard Owens, Jeff Jarvis, Rob Curley, Alfred Hermida, Bryan Murley, Paul Bradshaw, aos quais acrescento o PontoMedia do António Granado, o Atrium , o Comunicamos da UTAD, o Mediascópio, e o Travessias Digitais. Ah, e O Lago, claro.
  • 3- Criem um blog;
  • 4- Aprendam a contar histórias em vários formatos: video, áudio, slideshows, apresentações multimédia;
  • 5- Aproveitem os recursos do Poynter Online e inscrevam-se no LinkedIn;
  • 7- Explorem o potencial humano da vossa escola: falem com alunos mais velhos que já estejam envolvidos em projectos ou que tenham objectivos já definidos; conheçam e falem com os vossos professores, eles podem dar-vos uma preciosa ajuda na escolha de estágios, pós-graduações, ou oportunidades profissionais;
  • 8-Socializem: se não sabem lidar com pessoas, aprendam ou mudem de curso. Se não sabem falar com desconhecidos não se safam (acreditem que conheci muita gente em jornalismo com aptidões sociais mínimas);
  • 9- Conheçam o mercado e as tendências actuais;
  • 10- Adaptem-se: tudo evolui, e só quem acompanha a evolução sobrevive;
  • Agora deixem de ser preguiçosos e leiam o post completo Top Ten List of Tips for Journalism Students
