New interns’ blog @Público | Novo blog de estagiários no Público

After what i found to be a successful and interesting experience with i think it was the first official intern’s blog at a national newspaper, Público decided to pursue the effort creating a space where current interns can blog their impressions, difficulties, doubts, hopes, mistakes and accomplishments. This is a praiseworthy iniciative, because it does not only give voice to aspiring journalists as they have their first hands-on experience in a real newsroom environment – and one as reputable as Público’s – as it is a way for the company to show how is keeping up with its responsibilities as a trainer and nursery for budding journalists. A must read for all journalism students.

Depois do que achei ter sido uma experiência interessante e bem sucedida, com o que penso ter sido o primeiro blog oficial de um estagiário num jornal português, o Público decidiu prolongar a iniciativa criando um blog onde os seus estagiários podem fdeixar as suas impressões, dificuldades, dúvidas, esperanças, erros e vitórias. Esta é uma iniciativa de louvar, porque não só dá voz a aspirantes a jornalistas na sua primeira experiência real numa redacção – e uma tão notável como a do Público – como é uma forma de a empresa mostrar como está a cumprir as suas responsabilidades de formação de futuros jornalistas. Uma leitura obrigatória para todos os estudantes de jornalismo.

Vanessa Quitério is a friend of mine who started as an intern at Público, one of the major reference dailies here in Portugal. She started a blog that will work as log-book for her experience. Still in the first days of her  three month internship she has already got to a few conclusions: “-face this internship as an opportunity to learn how to improve my perceptions on journalism; -do not stress on the third day because someone says i can’t have some information; -don’t be demanding to the point of wanting to give up because i wrote an article upside down instead of using the inverted pyramid; -stay cool about my place as an intern , which is the place of those who get to do all the most boring stuff; -really learn from the tips people give me, since this is a valuable opportunity to learn from them;” Do you know any other interns blogging about their life and work in newsroom hell? Eu como estou numa de mudar de vida, ando a ver se melhoro o meu currículo, o site, o portfolio, porque num mercado de trabalho tão competitivo e em tão más condições, qualquer forma de se fazer o nosso bom trabalho notado tem que ser posta à consideração. Since i’m really at changing my life, i’m working on how i can change my resume, my website, the portfolio, because in a increasingly competitive job market, and one in such poor conditions, any way to make our good work noticed has to be considered. How to make the most of your journalism internship

Make yourself indispensable

The most important tip of all: You are more likely to be hired after your internship if your supervisor finds they can’t live without you. Make your unique skills known, assert yourself as a go-getter and find the one-of-a-kind stories that no other reporter even thought to cover. You are often one in a long succession of interns, so you must stand out from the rest to succeed in this business.

The ad reads:

This new position is for a multidisciplined and flexible multimedia journalist who can generate and execute multimedia ideas. Ideal candidates will be able to hit the ground running and juggle all types of content and content mediums on deadline assignments. One day you’ll be shooting breaking news photos and transmitting live from the scene, the next day creating a Soundslide feature on a local music festival, the next day shooting video of a political rally for the presidential election.

What is more revealing is the skills labeled as mandatory:

• iMovie or Final Cut Pro
• Audacity (or other multi-track audio editing programs)
• Soundslides
• Photo, video and audio content gathering and editing skills
• FTP and remote transmission skills
• Ability to turn high-quality projects quickly

• Ability to write cleanly and create engaging, informative blog entries, captions, web teases and headlines
