Google has launched another gigantic endeavour. This time their goal is to digitize 200 years of newspapers and collect them in a massive free access archive.

The possibilities that this project brings are huge: we can have a general overview of the newspapers or see the news and ads in detail. The most interesting is that we can search for any subject or look for related articles.

More than just a curiosity, the Google News Archive is a tool that puts 200 years of history within our reach, but it also gives a perspective on how journalism and newspapers have evolved throughout times.

For now only Canada and USA’s newspapers are being digitized, but the objective is to create a world collection.

I edited this crummy video so you can see what i’m talking about, there should be a voice over but i’m having some technical problems.

For more than 200 years, matters of local and national significance have been conveyed in newsprint — from revolutions and politics to fashion to local weather or high school football scores. Around the globe, we estimate that there are billions of news pages containing every story ever written. And it’s our goal to help readers find all of them, from the smallest local weekly paper up to the largest national daily.

The problem is that most of these newspapers are not available online. We want to change that.

Bringing history online, one newspaper at a time

BBC: 81 anos online | 81 years online

BBC announced that is going to make available online 81 years of radio and television shows. Each episode will have it’s own page with information regarding the show, and this project will take advantage of one of the richest archives in the world.

Spanning 81 years of radio and television, the project will create a web page for every episode of every single programme ever broadcast on the BBC, and be the basis of a future plan to introduce a searchable vault of archived shows.

It will bring information on every BBC programme ever shown, with clips, links and, eventually, whole programmes available either via the seven-day catch up service iPlayer, or commercial online video featuring Kangaroo, an on-demand service being developed with ITV and Channel 4, or a new online archive.
