O que está nas notícias? | What’s on the news?

Hoje decidi fazer um pequeno exercício: pegando em três dos maiores diários portugueses, fui comparar os seus conteúdos usando o Wordle, que gera tag clouds a partir de feeds RSS.  As secções escolhidas foram as generalistas, e é interessante ver as diferenças não só entre publicações como das capas para os temas mais falados. A hora de recolha de dados é o fim da manhã de hoje, ou seja, segunda feira em época baixa.

Today i decided to run a small test: i took three of the biggest dailies here in Portugal , and i compared their news contents using Wordle, that generates tag clouds from RSS feeds. I chose the more  general sections, and it’s interesting to see the differences  not only between the newspapers but also between their covers and the cloud. The time for the collection of this data was around the end of today’s morning, which is Monday in the low season.

A primeira tag cloud refere-se ao Jornal de Notícias, que apesar de fazer manchete com o homicídio de um taxista, online o  tema em destaque é o desporto com o  Torneio do Guadiana. De notar a presença do termo LUSA, já que grande parte do conteúdo tem como origem a agência noticiosa portuguesa.

The first tag cloud belongs to Jornal de Notícias, that despite making the frontpage with the story of a murdered taxi driver, online the strong topic is sports, with Guadiana’s football tournament. The word LUSA has a great relevance since most contents come from the national news agency.

No Correio da Manhã o assunto em destaque na sua tag cloud é o caso de Maddie McCann, um assunto que o jornal tem abordado até à exaustão. O homicídio do taxista também está presente.Na capa do jornal, nenhum dos dois tem grande presença.

In Correio da Manhã the most highlighted subject  of the tag cloud is the Maddie McCann affair, a story the newspaper has  covered to exhaustion. The taxi driver’s homicide is also referred. On the cover, none of these stories have much presence.

O Público também fala do taxista assassinado, e parece dar mais destaque a eventos internacionais: o preço do petróleo e o atentado em Istambul. Na capa, uma reportagem alargada sobre ciganos e assuntos de economia. Esta análise não é muito exacta por algumas razões: os jornais arrumam certos assuntos por secções diferentes, com feeds distintos, e o que para uns é Sociedade, para outros é Actualidade. Além disso, o timing da análise não será o melhor, já que estamos em período de férias e segunda de manhã é uma altura em que não existem muitas notícias. No entanto, e especialmente para quem conhece os jornais, demonstra as diferenças na orientação editorial de cada publicação. Este tipo de pesquisa pode ajudar a compreender não só que opções cada redacção faz, mas também como se define um certo universo informativo, e que assuntos são abordados para uma certa realidade. Talvez ajude também a perceber como a nossa percepção dessa realidade é moldada.

Público also has the story of the murdered taxi driver, and it seems  to give more notability to international events: the oil prices and the bombing in Istambul. On the cover, a story about gypsies , and economy issues. This analysis isn’t very accurate for some reasons: newspapers arrange some subjects in different sections, with distinct feeds, and what is Society for one is General news for other. Besides, the timing for this analysis is not the best, since we’re in a vacation period and Monday morning is a time where there aren’t many news. However, and specially for those who know these newspapers, it clearly shows the  differences in the editorial  orientation for each newspaper. This type of research can help to understand not only which options each newsroom makes, but also how a given informational universe is defined, and which subjects are approached for a certain reality. Maybe it could also help understand how our perception of that reality is shaped.
