Jornalismo SMS | SMS Journalism

A ideia é, no mínimo, interessante.

We can no longer live without a cellphone. It can be used for anything, even for phone calls. But what is we used them to assume our role as Citizan Journalists?

This is the starting point of the project headed by Guy Berger, that is promoting workshops for high school students in South Africa, to learn how to write news in 140 characters. Now it only takes to use the rest of the features to become truly mobile – and intrinsically, due to the technical characteristics of the device- multimedia citizen journalism.

Charlie Beckett wrote extensively about the importance of citizen journalism in the african continent thanks to these mobile devices. The idea is, to say the least, interesting.

And there’s a question apropos: can those messages be written in the current sms abbreviations to be later decoded at the newsrooms?

In August, we start some initial workshops with high school learners, to discuss with them what it takes to be “citizen journalists” – contributing content that the mainstream will publish.

What’s more, the content is constrained by being 140 characters long – sms is the method of comms for now. Over the course of 8 workshops, 80 learners in their penultimate school year will be trained about optimum Cit-journ in this way … all over two months.

Summer Institute 08: Dia 5 | Day 5

Ver video #2 | Watch video #2

Today was dedicated to the (Re)Construction of Journalism in the Digital Age. A controversial matter when we get to discuss the new business models and the role and position of digital journalists in the newsrooms. Since professor Rosental’s class is composed by intelligent people and with distinct ways (i wasn’t feeling particularly smart today, it’s the heat!), the thoughts that crossed the room made the workshop even richer. I believe that this is how we can find solutions, through dialogue and without irresolvable positions. I admit i missed this.

And today i found this post that meets what we discussed in class, and that talks about to a conference in Chicago last week. Read the post and do watch the videos.

On a personal note, this weekend i really have to work on the group project that we are developing at the workshop and get some rest in between, so, go to the beach and come back Monday, the Lake will be quiet.

Summer Institute 08: Dia 3 | Day 3

After discussing yesterday the history and evolution of the Internet, and analyzed blogs and news sites, today we started a workshop blog, and created groups to develop three different projects where we’ll turn theory into practice. In between, we discussed the semantic web, a subject that is really interesting to me. To illustrate this concept, professor Rosental Alves shared with us this fantastic video by Michael Wesch.
