INSIDE AND OUTSIDE of the paper, there’s no confusion about who the paper belongs to. Not the editors who built it, not the reporters who fill it with articles, but the men who bought and paid for it. - David Carr

This was the killer graph of David Carr’s mournful recent column, “At the Journal, the Words Not Spoken.” There are two big assertions here—ones that helped cause the great slide in the newspaper business. First, Carr implies newspapers are for the newsroom, not for the readers. And second, he suggests that there’s something wrong with the owners of a paper actually running it.

These are wrong ideas, ones that have tripped up journalism over the last 50 years, setting a fluid, dynamic business like concrete, into a stiff, unresponsive institution. J-school defined the methodology; the unions dictated the job descriptions; and the big chains, with their organization charts and greed did the rest.

1. Networked says Charlie Beckett

‘A kind of journalism where the rigid distinctions of the past, between professional and amateur, producer and product, audience and participation, are deliberately broken down. It embraces permeability and multi-dimensionality.’ (Beckett via Reportr.net)

What are you doing now?

Joana Vieira and Dina Monteiro are two students of Communication Sciences at the Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, they were asked to do an ivestigation project about Twitter for a multimedia class. They sent me a few questions that i answered the best i could. Leave your own answers in comments.

1- How did the idea of using Twitter in your blog came up?

To tell you the truth, i didn’t even know at first that i could use Twitter as a blog application. But as we’re always seeing what other people are using, and we jump from app to app, i ended up by finding TwitterFeed, that sends my blog posts to Twitter. And basically, apart from some contacts and recommendations, that’s what i use Twitter for.

2-What is it’s importance?

It’s huge. Not only because i had an increase in visitors as i got to make more contacts. Then it’s a different form of expression, more concise.
Twitter is like having a bunch of people in a big restaurant table, where people are organized by affinity and all the conversations are crossed, but even at the other end we can comment on what others are saying, and this can go from the most serious to the trivial. And socially is similar to a dinner party where we don’t know most people, because it works in the “friend of a friend” scheme, i mean, we are all related somehow, maybe by a common friend, then we’ll find the conversation that appeals to us more, and exchange contact. That is the other fundamental characteristic of Twitter, it’s a dialogue tool, more than a blog, and broader than text messaging. All in 140 char. (i’ve just found another metaphor: a blog is a canvas, twitter is a notepad).

3-How Twitter can be used in journalism?

Yesterday Paul Bradshaw was on Sky News explaning how important Twitter was as a breaking news tool in China’s earthquake ( seeThe Chinese earthquake and Twitter - crowdsourcing without managers). There are many applications for it in journalism. The first one is in gathering information: in the earthquake’s situation, the news was on the net before the competent organizations even knew there was an earthquake, it was tweetted as it happened by someone who was experiencing it in the moment. Which, on one hand, expands the basic premiss of Twitter (what are you doing now? I’m shaking…[you can lose the joke]). In a matter of minutes and without passing by middlemen there was extensive information on the event (what, where, when). Easily and fast spreading. Then, on the aftermath of the event, it can be used to contact people that gone through it, to ask for more informations, ensure contacts by other means. Besides we can confront the amount of information available about the same event thanks to keyword search tools. Then in the distibution phase is highly effective, presenting a short resume of the news story and a link to it. Twitter is faster than a RSS system, and it affects more people.
In a developing event it’s easier and more effective in updating the information than a story in a newspaper,or a blog post. Take a football game as an example: since we can be anywhere else without a connection to the web, we can have all the updates in our cell phone, seconds after the referee concedes a penalty, the player gets a red card, live the moment the goal is scored. These two characteristics - to be immediate and mobile - make Twitter as an ideal tool for journalists. Being simple makes it even more special.

Matthew Ingram says Twitter is the first draft of history. And he’s probably right.

4- As a user, do you recommend it?

It took me a while to use Twitter, but when i got aware of it’s potential, it was all pretty fast. In my case, i have more Twitter followers that RSS subscribers for my blog. Twitter is going to be the fastest growing application this year, and as soon mobile companies are convinced of it’s importance, i believe it will become widespread ( i bet next year there will be a cell phone with a Twitter button). Then, like any ither popular application, the number of complementary tools is huge, there’s a new one everyday. The main trend has been turning Twitter into a vessel for multimedia content, which will allow us to send videos through Twitter, that can be placed in a GoogleMap automattically with our exact location, such is the speed and the variety of available applications.
But even if it is just to say what are we doing now in 140 characters, of course i recommend it.

We live in a much more interconnected world where information is ever-more critical to our lives. And it is journalism that conveys that data and allows us to debate its significance. It is always hard to pinpoint exact moments or to detail precise occasions when journalism has altered the course of events, rather than simply narrating them. It is nigh on impossible to separate out media impact from the general conditions of events.

In this book I will outline what I call Networked Journalism. It is a new way of practicing journalism that is already becoming evident. It is a reflection of emerging realities. But it is also an opportunity to transform the ethics as well as the efficacy of journalism. Networked Journalism offers the chance for the news media to enhance its social role. It is a recognition that mainstream professional journalists must share the very process of production. Networked Journalism includes citizen journalism, interactivity, open sourcing, wikis, blogging, and social networking, not as add-ons, but as an essential part of news production and distribution itself.

And what kind of journalism are we producing in such abundance? Is the world of cyber-journalism going to be about citizen journalism or amateur pornography?
