Do Mark Hamilton | From Mark Hamilton

…+1.

Links para o fim de semana | Links for the weekend

Amostras e links abaixo. Bom fim de semana.

Mark Hamilton always has great suggestions. From his Wednesday Squibs i chose two: “The newspaper disease” by Roger Black, and a list of nine definitions for journalism ( my favorite is by cahrlie Beckett, i’m reading his book and i recommend you to do the same). Than i came across with an interesting post called “Blogs as a subversion of standard Journalism” from the brazilian blog Coffee’n'Cigarrettes. Samples and links below. Have a nice weekend.

INSIDE AND OUTSIDE of the paper, there’s no confusion about who the paper belongs to. Not the editors who built it, not the reporters who fill it with articles, but the men who bought and paid for it. - David Carr

This was the killer graph of David Carr’s mournful recent column, At the Journal, the Words Not Spoken.” There are two big assertions here—ones that helped cause the great slide in the newspaper business. First, Carr implies newspapers are for the newsroom, not for the readers. And second, he suggests that there’s something wrong with the owners of a paper actually running it.

These are wrong ideas, ones that have tripped up journalism over the last 50 years, setting a fluid, dynamic business like concrete, into a stiff, unresponsive institution. J-school defined the methodology; the unions dictated the job descriptions; and the big chains, with their organization charts and greed did the rest.

The newspaper disease, Roger Black

1. Networked says Charlie Beckett

‘A kind of journalism where the rigid distinctions of the past, between professional and amateur, producer and product, audience and participation, are deliberately broken down. It embraces permeability and multi-dimensionality.’ (Beckett via Reportr.net)
8. A conversation says Dan Gillmor

‘Tomorrow’s news reporting and production will be more of a conversation or a seminar.’

Journalism: what is it now and where next?

A História do Twitter | Twitter History 101

Business Week dedicated an article to Twitter’s evolution since it started 14 months ago. Yes, it’s been that long. The history of Twitter is well explained in a short slideshow, and as you can see in the chart above, it’s growth has been impressive.

Can the fledgling microblogging service become a social media powerhouse to rival giants like Facebook—or will it be gobbled up?

View Slide Show

The key question today isn’t what’s dumb on Twitter, but instead how a service with bite-size messages topping out at 140 characters can be smart, useful, maybe even necessary. Here’s why I’m looking. In the last few months, the traffic on Twitter has exploded, growing far beyond its circles of bleeding-edge tech enthusiasts and hard-core social networkers.

Now here are the Knight News Challenge 2008’s winners. There’s 16 of them and they’re splitting 5,5 million dollars to develop their digital communicação innovative projects. Among them, some familiar faces: Ryan Sholin, that won with his ReportingOn, and (Digi)Dave Cohn, that presented a project i find quite interesting.

The winners list can be seen here.

So what’s next? Spot Us will be a nonprofit to test a new business model - community funded journalism.

What I’m going to build will be a marketplace for journalism. News organizations (old or new media) can use the space to support their most enterprise projects. Community and civic organizations can come together, take a stand and let the media know what is being under-reported. Independent journalists can get paid to do what they do best - report on local stories, all while building up their portfolio.

My Next Assignment, Hopefully A Lifelong Contribution to Journalism ,David Cohn
